Most of the modes from the first game are returning, except for the Taco Bandits. There's also a Quest Board with different objectives for Plants, Multiplayer, and Zombies, Sticker Shops, a Multiplayer Portal, a Mailbox, and a special Garage with Quest missions for both sides. At the bases of both the teams there are some similarities, including a Customization Room allowing the character to change and accessorize characters. You can also earn awards and prizes after a certain achievements. Unlike the first game, you can play the game as solo for every modes. The characters are also 3D rather than 2D like in the first one.

All characters have very unique and different abilities. You can unlock new zombies, and new plants after tough trials.

All four have different abilities with different perks to using them. There are four playable plant classes: Peashooter, Chomper, Cactus, and Sunflower.
